Among the masterpieces of keyboard literature are the four opuses published by Johann Sebastian Bach under the modest title of Clavierübung (keyboard exercises). They are, however, the pinnacle of his art, pushing back the boundaries of the genres covered in the three volumes for harpsichord (the third for organ): I. Partitas, II. Concerto Italien and Ouverture à la française and IV. Goldberg Variations. The first of these collections, comprising six suites or partitas, is the very first opus that Bach, then aged 46, commissioned to be engraved, which reveals the importance he attached to these works!
